Q – What exactly is a Summer Internship, and why do I want one?
A – A Summer Internship is an opportunity to work short-term for a company in your academic field and learn what it is like to be an engineer or computer scientist. For approximately 10-12 weeks over the summer, you are an employee of a company, solving their problems, working alongside other engineers and scientists and getting a sense of what the “real world” is like. It is NOT simply busy work, but rather a chance to show your stuff on real technical concerns for the company. The internship will help you understand your field, what types of jobs there are for your major, what a given industry is like and whether you enjoy that work. It also gives the company a chance to assess your skills and talent, gauge whether they want to offer you a position when you graduate and even determine if Miami SEAS students are a good fit for their company. Thus it is important for you AND us that these experiences are successful, which is one of the reasons why you interview for them just like you would for a permanent position. At Miami, summer internships are typically paid positions that do not earn academic credit.
Q – When do I need to start thinking about an internship for an upcoming summer?
A – You should start thinking about a summer internship during the first semester of the academic year preceding the summer you wish to work. The event that should optimally start the process is the fall Career Fair, usually held in mid-September. While this Fair is geared toward permanent placements, many companies are already looking to fill their summer internship positions at that time and will conduct interviews for them during the fall semester. For those who choose to wait, the Spring Internship and Career Exposition (ICE) in mid-February is the next significant event you should target. At this Exposition, most companies seek to fill summer internship positions, while a few still are looking for permanent candidates. If you wait any longer than Spring ICE, you run the risk of missing out on a summer internship, so don't delay!
In addition to the Fairs, you should also utilize the Miami CAREERlink database in your job search. This database includes postings by the companies for positions they seek to fill. Some of these companies will be interviewing on-campus at Miami, while others will not. In order to participate in on-campus interviewing, you must register with Career Services and attend a Career Services Orientation session.
Q – What do I need to know about Career Fair and Spring ICE?
A – For the 2008 Calendar Year (January through December), approximately 30% of the employers (~ 70 out of 220) at these two events were seeking SEAS majors. When you realize that SEAS is only 6-7% of Miami's student population, you'll see that this is relatively a very large number. You need to dress professionally when you attend these events, and bring a substantial number of résumés (25 would be a good number). You should be able to talk about why you chose your specific major, what your career goals are and explain all parts of your résumé in detail. The Fair and ICE are your chance to impart to a company your interest in them and why you are qualified. You won't likely get a job at these events, but by not being prepared you can eliminate yourself from contention for one.
Q – How do I find out which companies are coming to recruit on campus?
A – Miami CAREERlink on the Office of Career Services website (www.muohio.edu/careers) is the best way to find out which companies are coming to Miami for on-campus recruiting. Their website has information on who is coming, when they'll be here, what type of position they seek to fill and what qualifies a candidate to interview for the position. In addition, there are also job postings for companies who seek job candidates but won't be coming to campus. The Office of Career Services should absolutely be a part of your job search strategy. You need to register with the Office of Career Services and attend a mandatory Career Services Orientation in order to interview for jobs on campus.
Q – When are these Career Services Orientations, and how often do I have to attend them?
A – The exact dates for these Orientation sessions is posted on the www.muohio.edu/careers website for the Office of Career Services. At the current time, once you attend an Orientation, you are eligible to do on-campus interviewing for as long as you are a Miami student. Keep in mind, though, that these Orientations are a great way to refresh your memory with regard to how to prepare for interviews and get the most out of Career Services.
